Making an Impact: The WE Store Opens at CF Rideau Centre

A store that inspires a social movement for change? That is what the WE Store is all about. They have opened their doors at the Cadillac Fairview Rideau Centre (CF Rideau Centre).  Ottawa Mommy Club was invited to get a sneak peek of the latest store to open in Canada at a special event, and it was fabulous.

WE is a movement that connects people and inspires them to change the world. People from all walks of life are helping to shift the focus of the world from “me” to “we.” The WE Store sells ME to WE socially conscious items such as clothing, jewellery, household items and more. Products sold in the store is provided from local brands who are partners of the WE Movement, as well as by those who help create change around the world such as handmade accessories from Kenya and Ecuador. When customers buy items from the WE Store, they are also able to see how their purchases impact social change around the world.

There are currently two WE Store locations open in Canada. This was made possible by the partnership WE has with Cadillac Fairview. Leasing for both stores has been donated in-kind by Cadillac Fairview as part of their philanthropic partnership commitment. The first WE Store was opened at the CF Toronto Eaton Centre in July 2016. The latest WE Store has opened its doors in Canada’s capital at CF Rideau Centre in Ottawa, ON on June 24, 2017, just in time for Canada 150 celebrations. It is also a temporary retail space, open only until January 2018.

What else sets the WE Store a part from other retailers at CF Rideau Centre?

The WE Store is a retail experience unlike any other. It is a 2 000-square foot facility that also allows for change-makers to have a space to meet and make an impact on our world. It is also an experimental store that features interactive activities such as a Rafiki Bar where change-makers can create their own rafikis (a beaded bracelet. The word “Rafiki means “friend” in Swahili) and choose their impact.

The retail space looks amazing! It is a bright, open and upbeat space. There are also a lot of items to choose from to look at to help support social change. Here are some of my favourite items to look at.

What made this event so special was the meeting some of the people involved in the WE Movement. Invitees had the opportunity to get to know and become inspired by WE Ambassadors Mama Helen, a WE artisan and supporter of empowering women in Kenya, and Hannah Alper of CallMeHannah.ca who has been raising awareness about environmental issues since the age of nine.  Roxanne Joyal was also on hand. She is the CEO of ME to WE and Founder of ME to WE Artisans. Each of them shared their extraordinary experiences of what lead them to become part of the WE Movement. It was great to get to listen to them and learn more about them.

Mama Helen then sat down with us and showed us the finer points of creating a rafiki. There is a bit of a learning curve to get over in order to quickly and effectively get the beads onto the thread. Once I got it, I was on my way to completing my first rafiki.

Two areas the WE Store are focused on sharing with Canadians is their love of Canada and the itch to get ready to go back to school. ME to WE have two collections that help change-makers get into the spirit of the occasions.

For those reveling in the joy of Canada 150, the WE are Canada line has clothing and products that will help show off the Canadian spirit. Proceeds from these items will go toward supporting education to Canadian students.

Kids of all ages returning to the grand halls of education will love the products the WE Store has to offer. The Back to School collection features stylish items that will help to encourage your mind on the learning that is to happen this upcoming school year. When purchased, items from this line help learning continue for students in Kenya.

This is some of the ways change-makers impact change, both at home and abroad when shopping at the WE Store.

The preview of the WE Store was really inspiring. We realized how simple it is to help create change in the world, and how others are doing their part to help others around them. The WE Store is not just a retail store. It is also a place to inspire people to come together to start looking beyond themselves to improve our world.

My name is Lian Wright. Born in Toronto, I came to Ottawa as a student to study Political Science at Carleton University, and came away with an Honours Degree, and decided to stay. I'm a huge sports fan, have a love of reading, and like experiencing new things whenever I can. I am now a mother of three children (11, 1 and 7 months old) and am kept constantly on my toes. My blog, Pieces of Me, is my way of sharing what I have enjoyed and encountered in my life so far as a mother. So far, being a mom has had it's expected ups and downs, but that's what makes being a parent so fulfilling for me. I've loved and learned from what's happened so far, and I can't wait to see what's in store for me next. I hope you enjoy the journey with me!
