Learning for All ages with DK Canada! ~ Review and Giveaway ~ CAN 11/09

| October 6, 2015 | 45 Comments

I love learning. It keeps my mind sharp and I am entertained when I find out about new things. I also enjoy picking up more information about subjects I already have an interest in. I get more insight into this topic, and I feel that much smarter. That is why I am glad DK Canada allowed me to review books from three of their amazing boutiques!

Star Wars Reads Day is October 10th, and we wanted to be a part of it! We were asked to review a book from DK Canada’s large Star Wars Boutique and to share for this event. We are huge Star Wars fans at home, and could easily do a marathon of all of the episodes that have gone to the silver screen over a weekend. This is why I felt I had to choose Star Wars: The Complete Visual Dictionary.

It was great to learn more about each of the characters in this iconic series, and to learn about certain items each person carried, vehicles they used and people they were close to within this series. The fashionista in me also loved checking out the costumes each character wore, wanting some of them for my own wardrobe. It was a fabulous way to see the Star Wars universe, and it took us a while to put this book down!

I was also asked to choose books from DK Canada’s Big Ideas and Crafts boutiques. My daughter began high school this fall, and with this big step comes, for some, one of the areas of their English class they dread: Shakespeare. I, too, did not want to read Shakespeare because I heard that it was going to be difficult to follow. I realized I was wrong and loved Shakespeare’s tales of love and victory and defeat. When I saw The Shakespeare Book: Big Ideas Simply Explained, I knew I had to review this one!

It shares an act-by-act timeline of some of Shakespeare’s more popular stories, along with a list of characters and how their role in the story, as well as a synopsis of the story and other tidbits about the time period and the theme of the tale in question. When my daughter has her first Shakespeare lesson, she will be able to understand the book she is assigned better with the help of this book. I wish I had a book like The Shakespeare Book during my high school days so I could have enjoyed the books I read for my English classes much more than I did.

For you readers that didn’t know this about me, I am currently planning my wedding (**insert wedding march here**)! There are so many details we are ironing out to put together the perfect day to celebrate our love and make this commitment to each other. I have grandiose plans about the overall look and feel of the day, but there are some aspects of the day that I am not the greatest at conceptualizing. You know, the extra little touches that will make the décor even more special. That is why I picked Style Your Perfect Wedding from DK Canada’s Craft Boutique.

Style Your Perfect Wedding has tips you can use for various different types of wedding themes, from invitations to décor ideas. This book also shares schedules for budgeting and beauty regiments that I was not aware of. I found so many more ideas I would want to incorporate into our special day after reading this book. I can’t wait to get started on them.

I learned so many new things about the subjects I love from these books from DK Canada! I learned about people from imaginary worlds far away from our own, from tales written centuries ago, and from a the near future in my own world. There is something that everyone in your family will be able to enjoy and take from these books. My family love them!

My name is Lian Wright. Born in Toronto, I came to Ottawa as a student to study Political Science at Carleton University, and came away with an Honours Degree, and decided to stay. I'm a huge sports fan, have a love of reading, and like experiencing new things whenever I can. I am now a mother of three children (11, 1 and 7 months old) and am kept constantly on my toes. My blog, Pieces of Me, is my way of sharing what I have enjoyed and encountered in my life so far as a mother. So far, being a mom has had it's expected ups and downs, but that's what makes being a parent so fulfilling for me. I've loved and learned from what's happened so far, and I can't wait to see what's in store for me next. I hope you enjoy the journey with me! Author's website.
