Improving your Home and Self with Books from DK Publishing Review and Giveaway ~ CAN 02/09

| January 22, 2014 | 8 Comments

home workoutI spent this past weekend with two wonderful books from DK Publishing. The first book was entitled Home Workout. The premise of this thick paperback instructional book is to provide readers with easy to follow pilates, yoga, abs and body toning workouts that can be done from the comfort of home in a mere 15 minutes a day. The book also includes an instructional DVD demonstrating six key routines from the book.

What I liked most about this book is that the instructions are easy to follow, not too long that they bore me from ever wanting to do them again, and that the pictures are bright, colourful and compliment the written instructions perfectly. This book is ideal for someone who is interested in fulfilling their new year’s resolution of getting fit, but is too shy to hit their yoga studio just yet.

The exercises in the book offer variety to an already established workout routine or give the beginner an easy-to-follow look at five great workout styles: pilates, yoga, abs, back workouts, and strength training. The workouts are written by a team of fitness professionals and are definitely a great way to institute a safe and effective home workout routine.

As a longtime home-based pilates fan, I can ensure you that the pilates exercises outlined in this book are a perfect way to introduce a person to the exercise and are highly effective in toning.

The best piece of advice from Home Workout is on page 13, “Don’t waste time getting ready to exercise. You are ready. Just begin.”

So, what are you waiting for! Retailing at only $12.95 +tax, this is one book you will refer to over and over again!home

The second book from DK Publishing that I could not put down is called, Step-by-Step Home Design & Decorating. This practical book serves as a useful guide to anyone looking to update, decorate or renovate their home.

The book discusses everything from choosing the right countertops and backsplashes for a kitchen to a how-to on sewing cushions for your living room sofa.  As someone in the midst of looking to update her 10 year old house on a budget, I found this book to be very interesting.

While all of the sections did not apply to me since I wasn’t looking to refinish or replace my kitchen cupboards, I did appreciate the sections pertaining to refreshing a room with the right lighting and how to make informed decisions about colour schemes and room layouts.

With step-by-step instructions and gorgeous photography, this book is a great resource for anyone who doesn’t have a clue on where to start or how to start changing the look of their home – inside and out! This book cannot only teach you to hang blinds properly, but also how to tile a bathroom! It’s a one stop resource for all things related to restyling your home.

My favourite section was, “5 Ways with Mirrors.” I have trouble finding the right sized mirrors for certain rooms, and as the chapter explains, having a mirror in a room or hallway isn’t just about having somewhere to check your appearance. The right mirror or mirrors can improve the light and proportions  of an otherwise narrow space.
