Getting it All Done in a Day

Well, I guess a more realistic title would be “getting as much of it done in a day as possible” since I don’t think I ever get it ALL done. But I have learned a technique to planning my day that enables me to check off most of what’s on my to-do list in a day, even when I’m completely unmotivated.

I first saw this idea on the MOMYS forum so I can’t really take credit for it. I’m just sharing about it since it helps me and I thought it might help you, too.

It’s called the Next Three Things.

I don’t know about you, but if I wrote a to-do list that looked like this:

  • make breakfast
  • get everyone dressed
  • wash dishes
  • start laundry
  • do diaper laundry (extra rinse)
  • fold laundry and put it away
  • hang up diaper laundry
  • school
  • lunch
  • lunch clean-up
  • sweep kitchen
  • vacuum living room
  • sweep play room
  • clean off my desk

And so forth and so forth, I would be exhausted just thinking about it. And I probably wouldn’t get more than a few items from the list done because I would be so intimidated by the whole thing that I wouldn’t know where to start.

But this looks so much more manageable:

  • coffee
  • change diapers
  • breakfast
Then when I get that done, I see:
  • start regular laundry
  • clean up from breakfast
  • sweep kitchen

Ok, got that finished..Take a break for a few maybe, and then I tackle the next three things on the list.

I purposely put items in my list that I would do anyway, like coffee and diaper changes. This helps the list to be not all “big” stuff and it makes it seem so much more manageable, even if the list is longer because of it.

When I focus on just 3 things at a time I don’t get as overwhelmed. It also leaves room for interruptions, which are a given in a house with small children.

Of course, I don’t always do them all in that order. If an opportunity to get something later on my list done presents itself earlier I’ll do it then. And when I reach that item on my list, I can cross it off already!
