Farewell to our Captain Daniel Alfredsson

I am shocked and stunned this afternoon as I am following TSN2 with my son and hearing that Daniel Alfredsson is leaving the Ottawa Senators for the Detroit Red Wings. From what I heard last evening on the sports news, it looked promising that Alfie was going to sign with Ottawa.

This is a sad day in the National Capital!

He played his entire career with the Sens in 1,178 regular season games, scoring 426 goals and 682 assists. He holds the playoff franchise record of 121 games played, a franchise high 51 goals and 49 assists, and will most likely be a Hall of Fame candidate.

Did he sign elsewhere for a more lucrative contract or to have a chance at winning the Stanley Cup with a better contending team? Was he not satisfied with Management for not spending the money necessary to compete with top NHL teams? Whatever the reason is, his shoes or should I say skates will be hard to fill in the Sens dressing room.

We will get a chance to see him play more often with the Red Wings franchise now that it will move to the Eastern Conference for the 2013-14 season. Will you boo Alfie when he plays against Ottawa this upcoming season?  Are you annoyed with him for choosing to sign with Detroit or do you accept his decision?  I have to say that I have mixed emotions right now… He was the fixture of the Ottawa Senators and our franchise leader. I would have loved for him to be a Sens forever and stay with the organization after he retires; however, I respect his decision and wish him well in Detroit. I am positive it was not an easy choice for him. I have to admit that it will be difficult to watch him play in another red jersey and not to cheer Alfie, Alfie, Alfie!

One of Daniel’s last shift as a Sens. This video was taken late in the 3rd period of game 4 vs the penguins in the 2013 playoff.

Farewell Alfie and until the Sens play against Detroit this fall!

It’s really a sad moment when a team loses their captain. I still remember when Saku Koivu was exchanged from Montreal to the Canucks. He was my favorite player of the Habs.

We just lost Iginla in Calgary so I feel your pain!

Thanks for posting that video. I was the one who filmed it 🙂

Those who follow the hockey club and their resident hero, “Alfie,” could sense something wasn’t right. It didn’t add up: the Senators unable to get the NHL’s longest-serving captain and their first legacy player signed to a contract before the free agent period opened Friday at noon.
