DK Pocket Genius Books – Facts At Your Fingertips #Review & #Giveaway ~ CAN 09/29

| September 5, 2013 | 53 Comments

Where did the summer go?  It’s back to school and though most kids aren’t real happy about that, I am a little excited to get back into a routine.  The lazy days of summer are being replaced with backpacks and homework.  During the summer months bed and meal times are fairly relaxed around here and it’s a constant battle keeping my little one entertained.  Although, after a while, I do dread making lunches and going a round with my daughter over what she’s going to wear, I have come to appreciate the routine and freedom of the school year.

For kids, September means back to school.  Back into routine of being gone all day, getting to bed earlier and hitting the books after school to get their homework done.  Often, kids will need to look for reference material to complete their assignments.  This is where DK Pocket Genius – Facts At Your Fingertips come in.

DKPocketGenius1

Destined to be toted in backpacks everywhere, this new reference series contains on-the-spot information in children’s favorite subject areas. Kids love facts: they want to know about the biggest, fastest, tallest, and oldest everything. The perfect sized books for backpacks, DK’s Pocket Genius series is bright, inviting, concise, and punchy. Featuring essential information, full-color images, glossary, and top ten lists, these books are a brand-new type of encyclopedia for young readers.

Your young reader will love to learn and complete assignments using their DK Pocket Genius series.  Here are the four DK Pocket Genius books that I was given the opportunity to read:  Mammals, Horses, Dinosaurs and Earth.

Mammals3

The Mammals DK Pocket Genius is a 156 page pocket-sized encyclopedia sporting over 200 mammal profiles.  From mammals as small as rats to as large as blue whales.  Find out all about them!  What do they like to eat?  Where do they live?  How big are they?  Each page contains clear and vibrant pictures of the mammal with information about them, things you will be amazed and surprised to know.  Did you know Squirrels can rotate their hind feet backward for better grip when climbing down trees headfirst?  This is just one of the many intriguing facts your young reader will be excited to learn.

horses3

The Horses DK Pocket Genius is also a 156 page jammed packed pocket sized encyclopedia  Information from the biggest Shire horse to the smallest pony.  Did you know that horses have been helping people in work, sports and leisure for centuries?  There’s so much to learn – their colours, markings, how big they are and where each breed comes from.  More than 130 horse and pony breeds are profiled in this book.  The horse is a breathtaking animal and DK Pocket Genius photographs bring that to life with sharp images and vibrant colours.

dinosaurs3

The Dinosaurs DK Pocket Genius will be a favorite amongst many of the young readers.  In this fascinating 156 page reference book there are profiles for 140 prehistoric animals.  Each page contains lifelike illustrations and small tidbits of information on each dinosaur, plus spectacular full-page images!  For more than 150 million years these giant reptiles, dinosaurs, winged pterosaurs and sea monsters dominated the Earth.  Questions about what they looked like, where did they live and what did they ate are all answered here!  Can you imagine running into a bone-crunching Tabosaurus, the most fearsome predator on the plains of China?

Earth3

Planet Earth is an amazing planet with its deserts, mountains, oceans and forests.  This 156 page mini encyclopedia is packed full of pin-sharp photographs and fascinating facts of the Planet Earth.  There are more than 180 of the Earth’s features profiled including volcanoes, tornadoes, rivers and weather.  There is just so much to learn about the Earth!  What causes earthquakes, where’s the world’s largest glacier and why does climate change happen?  Although tornadoes can be terrifying, they are also intriguing to us.  Read here how a tornado lifted a 91 ton train into the air and tossed it 80 feet away from the train track!

The DK Pocket Genius mini encyclopedias are a big hit in my house.  Although, they are geared towards the eight to fourteen year old reader, everyone enjoyed all four books.  These pocket references may be small but they are jammed full of amazing facts and beautiful photos, a great addition to any family library.
