My son is approaching two years of age and his personality is growing day by day. One of his newest traits is being afraid of the dark. In our house we have a skylight and my son will not go upstairs without the lights being on and clutching one of us. The other night he had his first nightmare where he screamed for us and then whimpered in his crib. So, it is time for night lights! We have the standard nightlight in his room and that seems to help. But we had another item to try this week!
Brobo is a cuddly robot that has a bright light in his middle that provides children with a bit of light at night. Brobo is thought to be a cuddly nightlight: a source of comfort for a child who is scared of being alone in the dark. There are different styles to choose from: Brobo and Pep (boy and girl robot), a dog, Mumu (a Mummy) and Trex (a dinosaur). To activate the light, the child (or parent) simply swipes the arm of the toy over his light sensor and it comes on. My son is a pretty smart cookie and he figured out the arm-swipe motion very quickly, all while giggling. The light can be dimmed and also has an auto-shut off at five minutes. These toys maintain the highest standards of safety and quality. This toy is CCPSA, CPSIA and ASTM F963-11 tested and approved for your child’s safety. The toy is recommended for 18 months and up (my son is 23 months).
The night we took Trex home, Max took him to his bed right away. He was sound asleep rather quickly with his arm wrapped around the toy. But mention ‘robot’ to him and he likes anything! I’m not sure whether he will continue to use it for months on end though as he tends to lose interest in toys rather quickly. I really liked the bright design of the toy, the amount of light emitted and that the batteries required were just 3 AA batteries (for parents that is an easy battery set-up). What I did not like about the toy was the vibration it gave off when you swiped the arm as I could see my son just playing around with the toy to make it vibrate. Also, children are messy, and the toy is only surface washable. My mind goes back to a stomach flu time last year when my son was sick all over his bed. If that happens again, I’m not sure a surface wash will get rid of that mess.
The Brobo huggable night lights retail for $34.99 and are available in certain retail stores and online. For Ottawa shoppers, Brobo and his buddies can be purchased at Tag Along Toys in Kanata.
Disclosure: I received the above mentioned products to sample. All opinions are honest and my own.
