If there was ever a time and place to put the Body Shop’s Hemp products to the test, it was the Ottawa winter. It’s still going strong and showing no signs of letting up! As I write this as the snow swirls around the house, every fresh new centimeter threatening to topple the ever-growing snow banks. The winter has been long, snow covered, and freezing cold – which means my skin has been exposed to months of dry, hot forced air heating at home and office buildings.
And if months of parched interior heat didn’t wreck enough havoc on my skin, it didn’t help that I started the winter with some serious peeling. A December trip to Australia resulted in a dramatic sunburn after a few hours at Bondi Beach. Apparently SPF 60 isn’t enough for me, but that’s a conversation for another day! I returned home exhilarated from the trip but with raw, rough, peeling skin, which was immediately plunged into the challenges of the Canadian winter. I’ve been an itchy, highly unattractive mess for a third of the year now and I need some serious help!
Enter the Body Shop’s Hemp products. Billed as heavy duty hydration for very dry, overexposed skin, the Hemp line contains fair trade hemp seed oil from England. Hemp oil has an unusually high concentration of fatty acids to soothe and repair damaged, dehydrated skin and additional ingredients, like beeswax, to help as well. I couldn’t wait to try the intensive hand butter, the hand protector, and the foot protector.
The intensive hand butter was so smooth and silky that I immediately started using it as an overall body butter. It did an outstanding job of making my skin feel soft and moisturized. As I would soon learn from all the products, the hemp line has a stronger scent than other Body Shop products. It wasn’t unpleasant but those who prefer lighter, fruitier scents may not enjoy it. The other thing I learned is that it takes a little extra effort for the products to fully absorb into the skin. I had to rub them in just a little bit more than the average lotion, or otherwise a white film of the product remained on my skin.
The hand protector comes in a metal tube with a small, flat, screw on plastic lid. With my hands lathered with a highly concentrated, slippery lotion, it was nearly impossible to screw the plastic lid back on! The hand protector offers very intense, very thick, concentrated moisture that would be ideal for anyone who has to wash their hands frequently, like a nurse or teacher, but it was almost too heavy for me and I found myself reaching for the slightly lighter hand butter instead.
My absolute favorite product was the foot protector. The smell was less intense and I thought I caught a whiff of peppermint in the mix. The very thick butter absorbed the best of any product and, before long; I was using it not just on my feet but my legs as well. After scrubbing my feet with a pumice stone, lathering them up with the foot protector, and sleeping in socks, my feet felt as soft and moisturized as if I had just had a high end pedicure.
Overall, the Hemp Body Shop lines delivers exactly what it promises, giving high quality, high intensity moisture for dehydrated, damaged skin. With winter still swirling around me, I’m not entirely out of the woods yet but after two weeks of using the Hemp products around the clock, I am well on my way.
