Mommy Hen (Lisa) is a mommy to 4-year old “Little Man” and has been married to “Big Man” for 8 years. She also serves as Manager of Communications for Chicken Farmers of Canada, as well as being a Certified Crisis Management Consultant. She is deeply rooted in both professional and community theatre, as well, working as a theatre and music director for various theatre companies across Ottawa and having recently served as Chair of the Ottawa Fringe Festival.

Mommy Hen is passionate about giving her family healthy, nutritious meals – quite a feat with a fussy son and a husband whose tastes have historically been pretty narrow. She’s also passionate about being an involved mom – meaning a constant struggle not to helicopter, but to be available, accessible and supportive of the village of teachers, daycare providers and other professionals that help her son be the best Little Man he can be.

Sleep – A Remembrance

Sleep – A Remembrance

I love sleep.  I do.  I saw a funny e-card that read something like: “Dear Naps: I’m sorry I was so mean to you in kindergarten”.  Cracked me up – because it was so true. Before Little Man came along, I would sleep until the last possible second before I would have to get […]

Breaking the Rules – Parenting Solo When You’re Sick

It was a Saturday. And I was sick. I’m talking knocked-on-my-rear, antibiotics, flat-out, sick. And Big Man had to work that day. And it was Little Man’s birthday dinner that night.  Not a house-full-of-screaming-kids kind of dinner, but some of our adult friends who’ve known Little Man since he was born – more like family […]

Daycare Drop Off Drama

I’ve been told never to let someone else’s bad mood influence how you go about your day.  While you have a role to play in being kind, if that doesn’t work, you’re probably not the problem.  I’m going somewhere with this… Little Man had been going through a bit of a phase – one that […]

When My New House Became My Home

Big Man and I made the mother of all purchases this past December – we bought our first house. With an active 3-year old and a lifestyle that requires us to be involved in a pile of different projects, we were seriously running out of room.  Our apartment was beautiful – overlooking the canal, […]

Wait. What? Pack a Lunch? Really?

So, Little Man is starting a new daycare – again (read about the transition here).  In reading the reams of information provided to parents from this new place, I learned that he’s now required to bring his own lunch. From the time he was about 2, his weekday food needs were covered. The […]

Daycare Transition and Changes in General

Woody Allen once said “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” That’s apt, especially if you’re the parent of a young child.  Just when you think you’re in a great routine with your child, something changes, something alters, and all of a sudden, you’re back at square one, looking at this […]

Uber-Active Little Man Eats Rainbows – Most of the time…

Here’s the thing.  Little Man isn’t so little.  He was almost 10 pounds at birth and 24 inches long. Now, he’s 3.5 years old and he’s already 3 feet 7 inches tall and weighs in at a muscular 45 pounds. He’s long, thin and has no bum to speak of.  Seriously, no bum. Every time […]
